So you’ve decided you want to lose some weight. Why is losing weight and keeping it off so hard?  Where do you start?

Changing your eating habits and getting up off the couch and going for a bike ride or a jog or even just a brisk walk. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and burn more calories than you take in, and you lose weight. Losing weight is hard because you develop bad habits, and changing habits takes effort. It’s like a reality makeover show for your life.

What does strategic eating look like?

1. You need to try to eat 5-6 light meals in aday. This will help you speed up your metabolism. Starting with breakfast, it is an important meal. It gives your metabolism a jump start because your body will need it to start your day. Eat meals from a dessert plate instead of a dinner plate.

2. Substitute What You Eat. The easy way to start is stop drinkingsodas,colas and other sugary drinks.Get some more water instead of it. Stay away from fast food, junk food, deep fried food. Choose whole grains for your carbohydrate. Whole wheat bread, brown rice, cereals,etc. They are high in fiber and nutrients. They keep you full longer and give you longer sustaining energy than sugary processed foods. Take a good source of protein like chicken and fish,not fried but grilled,steamed,baked or poached.

3. Eat your vegetables and fruits. You will finally realize what your parents said it when you were a kid and they were right.Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and leafy greens. When preparing a meal try to make the vegetable the main dish and the meat the side dish. They are lower in calories and higher in fiber and nutrients. They will fill you up without adding a ton of calories.

4. Keep a journal or call friend instead of eating cookies when you’re stressed or bored. Sometimes you do things that you don’t realize.

If you follow these simple guidelines, gradually your mood and your energy will increase. You will start to feel better and as a result your activity will increase and you will start to lose pounds. It may take time, but it’s a lifestyle change, NOT a diet. Be patient and stick with it and you will feel better and look better.
